My First Humira Injection

I’m taking a bit of a photojournalistic approach for this post.  Tom documented the process for my first Humira injection, so I figured I would share it.  You can read about my switch from Enbrel to Humira to treat my rheumatoid arthritis here.

GO!  My first Humira injection.

There’s not much to say about Humira yet – it will take some time to tell what it does for me.  All I can say so far is that the Enbrel “Sure Click” auto-injector was much friendlier — less painful and easier to administer.  This pen was weird; I could really feel it pushing the liquid underneath my skin, and others were right: it burns.  Good news:  I’m only on every other week injections for now.

  1. I'm so glad you documented this. I am being put on Enbrel for the first time. Just diagnosed in July and this will be my first biologic drug. Thanks for sharing your journey with everyone.Debra

  2. Hi Debra – I'm so sorry that you are facing this! I will tell you that Enbrel worked great for me for a number of years. The auto-injector is very easy for Enbrel – although some people do prefer the pre-filled syringes (I prefer not the see the needle!). I pray that it works well for you. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I hope this medication works well for you! I do have a suggestion though – I used to do my shots in the leg, and it hurt so bad. One day, a fellow “user” suggested I “shoot up” in my stomach instead, and even though it does still hurt, it is much friendlier. I also ice the injection site beforehand, about the same amount of time as I let my pen sit out and warm up. It seems to help a little, even if you still shoot in the leg.

  4. Thanks! I have heard a few others say that the stomach is easier, so I think I will try it next time. It seems easier to “pinch the fat” there 😉 The Enbrel was easy in the leg for me, and the stomach always scared me, so I never tried it! Re-thinking that with Humira!!

  5. How's it going. I've been on it for nearly three years now. Painful little sucker isn't it. It's not without it's issues but it changed my life. It's a shame it doesn't stop the progress of the disease like they hoped.

  6. My wife used Enbrel then changed to Humira, but somer long holiday to France cleaned whole body from sores caused of Arthritis Psoriasis, sea in France salty and very good. Recommend highly to treat this disease by sea procedures and sunny weather…
